The short is full of stunning practical and CG effects, a seamless marriage of the two as the perfect testament to Chavez’s deep understanding and love of both. Kalos Studios was brought in to tackle the one minute long opening title shot. With Chávez’s vision as a guide, we post-visualized the camera animation, FX simulations, and ensured a seamless transition from the title to the film. We also captured the dense, high-resolution mesh of the hero crucifix for a full CG replacement, handing it off for lighting, shading and compositing by Barnstorm VFX Vancouver. It was an inspiring example of studios creatively supporting a talented director to bring a new voice to horror. As a period piece set 25 years ago, there were a number of invisible VFX shots needed to support the story. Our visual effects supervisor, Armand Vladau (The Now), was tapped by PictureShop VFX to oversee the pre-production and on set production in Vancouver for this 10-episode flagship show. Stacked with stars like Queen Latifah and Mark Duplass, Streetlights really shines with captivating performances from newcomers Chosen Jacobs (IT) and Kristine Froseth (The Society). Kalos was brought in by UMedia to provide a solution for a car chase and flipping sequence filmed in a green screen studio (for safety) but set on a highway in the snow-covered Midwest. To ensure background consistency across the sequence and control car speed, car tilt and roll, we knew we had to build out a bespoke procedural setup. Using a combination of Digital Matte Painting and compositing, our team created two massive 16K resolution backgrounds, complete with roads, blockades, signs, poles, and wires, for projection to simulate real-world speed and parallax. Kalos was brought on board, working with other vendors both locally and in New York, to polish up Chucky and bring his eyes to LED-life in one of the film’s pivotal sequences. Our artists cleaned up the practical doll, restoring the soft plastic look of the face, with additional CG for the eye replacement and animation. We also had a hand in the Buddi Bear eyes and some other invisible VFX shots throughout the sequence.
